If you travel frequently to the New York area, Palm Beach International (PBI) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) are excellent choices. Both have frequent direct flights to Newark (EWR), with PBI offering the most convenient access for Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and West Palm Beach residents. For Central Florida residents, Orlando (MCO) has the most nonstop options of any Florida airport.

Jacksonville
25 minSpread out city. Traffic is manageable outside of rush hour. I-95 and I-295 are main arteries.
Orlando
30 minHeavy tourism traffic on I-4. Many residents use toll roads (E-Pass, SunPass) to avoid congestion.

How Florida commuting compares to the Northeast
For NJ and NY transplants, here is the good news: Florida commutes are generally shorter and more predictable than what you are used to. A 30-minute drive in Bergen County can mean stop-and-go traffic on the GWB approach. In Florida, a 30-minute drive usually means 20-25 miles of steady highway cruising. The trade-off? You will need a car. Public transit is not a realistic alternative in most Florida cities.

If you plan to split time between Florida and your home state, or just visit regularly, airport access becomes a deciding factor in where you live.
Best Airports for Northeast Access
For flights to NY/NJ/CT/PA, the most convenient airports are:
- Palm Beach (PBI) - Direct to EWR, BOS
- Fort Lauderdale (FLL) - Direct to EWR, JFK, LGA, PHL, BOS
- Orlando (MCO) - Most nonstop options total
- Tampa (TPA) - Direct to all 5 NE hubs
One-Stop Connections
Every major Florida airport has connections through Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), or other hubs to virtually any Northeast destination. A one-stop adds about 1-3 hours to total travel time compared to a direct flight.
Tip: If you live in a smaller market (Sarasota, Fort Myers, Melbourne), a one-stop through Charlotte or Atlanta is the most reliable option.
