Moving from New Jersey to Florida is one of the biggest transitions you'll ever make. After guiding hundreds of families through this exact move, I've distilled the process into a clear, month-by-month timeline. Here's your roadmap.
12+ Months Out: Research & Planning
This is the discovery phase. You're not committed to anything yet. You're gathering information, exploring options, and getting your financial picture clear.
- Define your Florida budget and target monthly payment
- Research Florida towns using our Town Guides
- Take the Which Florida Town Is Right for You? quiz
- Compare cost of living using our Cost Comparison
- Plan a scouting trip to see Florida communities in person
6-9 Months Out: Get Serious
Now you're narrowing down your timeline and making concrete plans. You're still in the research phase, but with more urgency.
- Get a professional home valuation for your NJ property
- Interview and select your NJ listing agent
- Connect with a Florida agent in your target market
- Begin mortgage pre-approval for your Florida purchase
- Start any home repairs or improvements needed before listing
3-6 Months Out: Execute the Plan
This is when things get real. Your NJ home is going on the market, and you're actively searching for your Florida home.
- List your NJ home for sale
- Begin actively searching for Florida homes
- Make an offer and go under contract on your Florida home
- Schedule your home inspection
- Research moving companies and get quotes
1-3 Months Out: The Final Stretch
Closings, logistics, and the practical work of actually moving. This is the most intense period.
- Close on your NJ home
- Close on your Florida home
- Update your driver's license (required within 30 days)
- Register vehicles and update voter registration
- Forward mail and update all accounts with new address
After the Move: Settling In
The move is done, but there are important financial and practical steps to complete.
- File for Florida Homestead Exemption (by March 1 of the following year)
- Update your address with IRS, Social Security, and Medicare
- Find new healthcare providers
- Explore your new community and make it home
